Coronavirus updates in Central Texas: Travis County reports another death from COVID-19

Here are the latest COVID-19 updates, closures and postponements in Central Texas for Saturday, Feb. 6.

COVID-19 numbers:

  • Texas: More than 2.1 million cases have been reported in the state, and more than 38,100 people in Texas have died, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
  • Central Texas counties: 
    • Travis County: At least 71,623 cases have been reported and at least 684 people have died. At least 66,560 people have recovered from the virus.
    • Hays County: At least 15,378 confirmed cases have been reported and at least 198 people have died. At least 13,235 people have recovered from the virus. 
    • Williamson County: At least 33,322 cases have been reported in the county and at least 344 people have died. At least 31,583 people have recovered from the virus.

Updates:

6:20 p.m. – Travis County reported another death from COVID-19 on Saturday along with 197 new confirmed cases, bringing the total to 71,623 cases and 684 deaths since the start of the pandemic. At least 66,560 people have recovered from the virus.

Travis County currently has 452 people hospitalized with COVID-19, with 137 in the ICU and 92 on ventilators. There are 40 people being treated at the alternative care site at the Austin Convention Center.

4:05 p.m. – Gov. Greg Abbott said Texas set a new one-day record for the number of COVID-19 vaccinations administered, at 179,910. He said the state surpassed 3 million vaccinations administered on Saturday.

3:55 p.m. – Hundreds of Central Texas veterans were able to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Austin Veterans Affair Clinic on Saturday.

Veteran Affairs workers told KVUE they have been working hard to try to get as many of their clients vaccinated as possible right now. 

They serve 19,500 veterans in the Central Texas area, a large portion of them in the high-risk age group above the age of 75.

While most of the vaccines were scheduled via phone for Saturday, 250 walk-ins were accepted until 2 p.m. Veterans must register before they can get vaccinated.

1:30 p.m. – KVUE's Brad Streicher reports that 638 people were eligible to get their second dose of vaccine at the drive-thru event put on by Travis County and community partners. Mayor Steve Adler told Streicher that he wants more of this type of event in the future and he wants them to serve more people.

9 a.m. – Travis County leaders and community partners are hosting a drive-thru vaccine clinic to administer second doses to CommUnityCare patients, teachers and staff from local school districts and Capital Metro employees who received their first dose on Jan. 9.

8 a.m. – Students and staff members in Eanes ISD can get a free COVID-19 test at the district's Adult Transition Services Building on Wash Tarlton Lane. Testing will be open from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
