Many adults over the age of 60 lead healthy, active lives. But health experts have learned that people 60 years old and older are much more likely to get seriously ill if they become infected with the coronavirus – regardless of their lifestyles.
The reason: Even with good health, immune systems weaken with age. That's why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is offering special guidelines for older adults on their website.
Among those recommendations:
- Stay home as much as possible.
- If you need to leave the house, wash your hands thoroughly before going out and after returning.
- If possible, find ways to have food and medicine delivered to your home.
Early symptoms of a coronavirus infection can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. The CDC says if you show any of those symptoms, you should call your doctor first. Don't show up for testing unless your physician orders it.
Even though this advice is meant for people over the age of 60, the CDC says it is advice is good for everyone, regardless of age.
