Lone Star Circle of Care gets boost through state program

The new funding will help renovate the center, provide equipment and hire more staff.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Monday, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) announced new funding to improve health care services across the state.

More than $19 million in grant money was made available to health care centers that offer services to uninsured Texans.

In Central Texas, Lone Star Circle of Care in Georgetown is getting part of the grant. The new funding will help renovate the center, provide equipment and hire more staff.

Statewide, the grant projects are estimated to serve more than 200,000 patients, according to DSHS.

“Having previously participated in the FQHC [Federally Qualified Health Center] Incubator Program, support from DSHS has been vital to improving Lone Star Circle of Care’s capacity to provide comprehensive health care throughout Central Texas. With the FY2023 award, LSCC transitioned from our former Big Pink Bus mobile mammography unit to a new, more dependable vehicle,” Lone Star Circle of Care Vice President for Advancement Kim Roberts said. “This upgrade promises to enhance access to timely and affordable breast cancer screening for underserved women in our region.”

The Texas Legislature appropriated an additional $40 million in funds to be awarded to qualified health centers in 2024.

Eligible centers are considered on a first-come, first-served basis, and applicants must specify which activities they need funding for based on a list of available options. Health centers may review information about the application process and submit their application on the DSHS website.
