KYLE, Texas — Not everyone can get regular checkups, and that's why a hospital in Kyle opened it's doors to more than 1,000 people on Saturday.
"It feels good to get your eyes and ears checked to make sure you don't have anything wrong with your body," said six-year-old Layla.
Little Layla and her sister Kelly do not have the opportunity to get regular checkups.
"Both have not had vision screenings because they switched schools during the year," said Monique Boitnott, foster parent of the children.
"Now we've got dental appointments scheduled because they've never been to the dentist in their life," Boitnott explained.
The family was among more than 1,000 people who visited the Seton Medical Center in Kyle for the annual Medical Mission at Home event.
"This is a good opportunity to provide care for free," said Dr. Fausto Meza.
Currently, only 12 percent of the people in Hays County are insured by Medicaid. That's way below of the state average of 21 percent.
"The need here in Hays County is important," said Meza. "Many don't have many primary care doctors or health insurance in a county growing so fast."
"It's hard to get into eye doctors and get their medical needs taken care of," said Boitnott.
The event gave people the opportunity to get primary medical care, cardiology, dermatology, kids vision - a lot different services for free to the community.
For kids like Layla, the hope is that this checkup will help her feel better.
"So I can see the classroom board," she said.
"It makes me feel really supported that the community comes together and has this opportunity for all of us," her foster parent explained.
Caretakers at the hospital plan on keeping up with the families to monitor any health problems.
