Police had received tip in 2015 about South Austin shooting suspect

The KVUE Defenders are learning more about the suspected gunman and a 7-year-old police report that investigators now believe involved him.

AUSTIN, Texas — In 2015, police received a report about the suspected gunman in a South Austin shooting that killed Officer Jorge Pastore during a SWAT callout on Saturday morning.

On Wednesday, the Austin Police Department identified the suspect and released more information about what happened during the shootout, which resulted in the suspect's death and two of his apparent victims being found dead.

The KVUE Defenders are learning more about the suspected gunman and a 7-year-old police report that investigators now believe involved him.

Authorities inside this investigation are continuing to go through information both at the scene and in records within APD to try to learn more about the shooter, who police identified as Ahmed Mohamed Nassar.

According to four sources with knowledge of the investigation, Austin police got a report in 2015 about an unidentified man who lived on Bernoulli Drive involving suspicious activity. The caller reported that he was seen doing physical training, and the caller believed he may be involved in terrorism.

The tip was sent to the Austin Regional Intelligence Center for investigation. Police found no information linking Nassar to criminal activity. They did not arrest him, nor was he on an FBI watch list. That's according to both local and federal sources.

But other investigative records were expunged after five years under a federal guideline for federally funded, multi-jurisdictional intelligence centers in cases when no criminal link is established. That means that any steps police took to investigate are unknown. The only record police have today was documentation of that 2015 phone call.

The investigation is ongoing. Officials say they did find extensive weaponry inside the home. The FBI is helping APD work the crime scene because of its scope and complexity.
