Leander community comes together to give police K-9 a bulletproof vest

Work just got a lot safer for a Leander K-9 named Kodi and his handler, Officer John Carnley.

LEANDER, Texas — Taking care of our paw patrol, a Leander K-9 will now be able to patrol the streets with some added protection thanks to a donation from the community.

"They are an officer just like any human officer," said Lynne Rock, who helped organize the community to pay for a bulletproof vest. "Sometimes they're the first one in, so why not give them the protection there is available."

Work just got a whole lot safer for K-9 Kodi and his handler, Officer John Carnley.

"In a dangerous situation where someone can be armed, now I have a tool that can protect him," Officer Carnley explained.

The new addition to his wardrobe is a vest that could potentially save his life.

The bulletproof and slash-proof vest cost the community more than $900, and all of it was organized through Facebook.

"I called and asked if he had a vest," said Rock. "He did not, so I organized a fundraiser to get him protected in case he goes anywhere he is not safe."

The vest is now the perfect protection for this paw patrol officer, all in hopes to help him combat crime one sniff at a time.

"This is a way for people to contribute if they wanted to in supporting the police department," Rock explained.

"I've seen support from the community every day that I've worked here," said Officer Carnley. "This is no different than anything else they support us with."
