AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police are investigating after a man died at a South Austin apartment complex early Sunday morning.
According to police, they received a call about a "man down inside the grounds" at the Bainbridge Villas apartment complex located at 3603 Southridge Drive. The call came in at 2:47 a.m. Sunday.
Two witnesses reported finding the man outside Building 18 and called 911. They were instructed to begin CPR until officials arrived.
Police said when they arrived on the scene, they found Guillermo Bernal with fatal injuries. Bernal was pronounced dead just before 3 a.m.
The exact cause of death has not been determined, but police said the Travis County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.
Detectives are still trying to determine if this homicide was random or if Bernal knew his assailant.
"It just hit us out of nowhere, you know," said Jose Quecada, Bernal's step-brother. "We weren't expecting this – no one really expects anything like this."
Quecada, along with the rest of the family, are looking for answers.
"We don't know why, the reason," said Quecada. "Everyone right now is just shocked ... kind of like disbelief."
Bernal was a father of six and a husband.

For Quecada, he's remembering the good times and the kind of brother Bernal was.
"It was nice having older brothers to take care of you and to kind of teach you lessons and what not," said Quecada. "I just hope he's at peace where he's at right now."
