More than 50 residents displaced after fire at apartment complex on Wells Branch Parkway

The fire was at the Chardonnay at Wells Branch apartment complex at 1801 Wells Branch Parkway.

AUSTIN, Texas — Just before 10 p.m., the Austin Fire Department said a two-alarm fire at the Chardonnay at Wells Branch apartment complex at 1801 Wells Branch Parkway had been knocked down.

The Austin Fire Department tweeted Sunday evening that they were assisting the Pflugerville Fire Department with the fire, which had gone through the roof.

The Travis County fire marshal's office believes the fire started in a void between units. It is not ruling out an electrical issue as the cause of the fire, but as of right now the cause is undetermined.

Assistant Fire Marshal Gary Howell said the fire may be accidental.

AFD's incidents Twitter originally tweeted about the fire at 9:10 p.m.

AFD said the fire cause is under investigation by the Travis County Fire Marshal. More than 50 residents were displaced from 32 units in the building.

The Central Texas Red Cross and apartment management are assisting.

Pflugerville Fire Battalion Chief Mark Moellenberg said once crews arrived on scene it didn't take long to break down the fire, only 20 to 30 minutes.

Moellenberg said it appears the fire started in an attic of one of the apartment buildings, where eight units sustained direct damage. Units on both sides of the building sustained both smoke and water damage.

Crews are expected to remain on scene throughout the rest of Monday morning to keep an eye out for any hot spots or flare-ups.

Moellenberg credited functioning smoke detectors in the units for sounding off and alerting residents to evacuate. No residents or pets were reported injured.

One of those displaced is Air Force veteran John Kimbrough. He lived at the complex for seven years and is staying with his daughter in Liberty Hill.

Kimbrough came back for medicine and clothes on Monday. He found his unit with smoke and water damage.

"I don't know what to do," said Kimbrough. "But my church is helping me. My friends are helping me. And I know it's all going to work out because material things can be replaced."
