ALAMO HEIGHTS, Texas — An Alamo Heights homeowner is offering a reward to find the person responsible for killing a beloved neighborhood squirrel with an arrow.
Sarah Reveley has spent the past 20 years turning her backyard into a sanctuary for wildlife. She lives near Corona Avenue and Greely Street.
“We have a total of six squirrels in our family and they’ve always been here,” Reveley said.
One of the squirrels was affectionately named Cedric, according to Reveley. On Sunday, a routine squirrel sighting turned into horror.
“I looked at him and I thought, ‘He’s got a twig or something [in his neck],’” said Reveley. “Then I looked closer and saw it was an arrow! Sticking through him! I just couldn’t believe it.”
Cedric had been shot by a dart. Reveley believes the culprit used a blowgun.
“It can be used on anything; on a dog next door or accidentally hit a kid,” Reveley said.
She snapped a couple of photos of the wounded squirrel. However, when Reveley tried to approach Cedric, he ran off. The squirrel, who never misses a meal, hasn’t been back since.
Reveley told KENS 5 two other squirrels were found dead in her backyard this summer, though it’s unclear how they died.
“I feel like it’s connected,” she said.
Reveley reported the incident to the Alamo Heights Police Department. She is also offering a $500 reward for information on the person who shot Cedric.
“I still don’t know who did it did, but I know for damn sure that I’m going to find out,” said Reveley, “This isn’t going to happen again.”
Alamo Heights has an ordinance prohibiting inhumane treatment of animals. Another ordinance bans the use of air guns within city limits.
