Has Austin's population growth impacted your experience on the Hike-and-Bike Trail? Austin Parks & Rec. wants to know

The goal of the study is to figure out how to ensure the trail remains a 'natural sanctuary' for everyone.

AUSTIN, Texas — Editor's note: The related video about scooter use on the Hike-and-Bike Trail was published in December 2019.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department wants to ensure the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail remains a natural sanctuary for everyone as Austin's population continues to grow.

To do that, the department has partnered with The Trail Foundation and the Austin Public Works Urban Trails Program for a safety and mobility study.

"The purpose of the study is to understand how recent growth in Austin and increased use of the trail has impacted the experience for residents and visitors," according to a press release.

The study will focus on how future growth will impact the trail in the coming decades and will determine community interest in trail widening, maintenance, lighting or on-street connections.

Community members can provide their feedback through a Wikimap (available in both English and Spanish). People can share where they go on the trail and how they get there and whether they encounter any problems or safety concerns while on the trail.

The department will hold two community engagement events about the study in April:

  • Lamar Beach
On the Trail at Austin High Baseball Field
Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m. to noon.
  • Metz Recreation Center
    2407 Canterbury St.
    Monday, April 20, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The study should be completed by the summer.
