The city of Austin didn't have to look far for a temporary replacement for outgoing Chief Art Acevedo. Interim city manager Elaine Hart named Acevedo's chief of staff, Brian Manley, as the new interim chief for Austin Police.
Acevedo announced he was leaving Austin to take the police chief job in Houston early Thursday morning. The longtime chief in Austin shed tears during a Friday press conference where he talked to the media about his move to Houston.
After Acevedo spoke, Manley was announced as the new interim chief.
“Brian Manley has been a dedicated police officer with City of Austin for more than two decades and I am confident he will effectively and proudly lead the men and women of the department during this time of transition,” Hart said in a statement. “The City of Austin has an exemplary police force and under Brian’s direction they will continue building upon the department’s success. I look forward to working alongside him.”
Manley started at APD as a Patrol Officer in 1991. He's served in multiple roles throughout his career including overseeing Internal Affairs, Special Operations, and Recruiting and Training.
In 2012, he was promoted to Assistant Chief and later in 2015, he was named the second in command at APD when he was promoted to Chief of Staff.
