Today, the average Austin homeowner is sending to other school districts about $1,000 more than they did five years ago.

AUSTIN -- All week we've been doing a series of stories on affordability issues facing Austin.

A lot of it revolves around taxes, and tonight we're taking a look at what more than half of your property tax bill goes toward -- education.

In particular, what we pay into school recapture. Districts like Austin are paying money to the state to fund other districts.

This is a look at how much more people in Austin have paid into the Robin Hood program over the last five years.

Today, the average Austin homeowner is sending to other school districts about $1,000 more than they did five years ago -- and is actually paying less to Austin ISD itself.

In fact, for the first time this year, the state will take more of your money than the city gets.

It is why school funding needs to be addressed in the next legislative session.
