Austin airport warns of busy travel day as ACL comes to a close

More than 37,000 people are expected to fly out Oct. 14 from Austin.

AUSTIN, Texas — After two weekends packed with live performances, Austin City Limits Festival (ACL) has come to an end.

As the annual event wraps up, many travelers are expected to fly out of the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA).

The airport said Monday could be one of its 10 busiest days of all time, with more than 35,000 passengers expected to depart.

Officials are asking travelers to follow a series of guidelines for the safest experience possible.

When should you arrive to the airport?

The ABIA recommends anyone traveling within the U.S. to arrive two and 1/2 hours before their flights. Those traveling internationally should get to the airport at least three hours in advance.

Travelers can create a more streamlined experience by getting dropped off at either the upper or lower departure levels, and by double-checking their carry-ons ahead of time.

With an influx of passengers, long lines are also expected.

For those using Allegiant Airlines or Frontier Airlines, departures are separated from the rest of the airport at the South Terminal, on 10000 Logistics Ln. Travelers flying with these airlines should allow at least a half hour for the main terminal shuttle or 20 minutes to drive from the airport parking lot.

How is the Austin airport preparing?

With a busy day expected, the Austin airport is finding a number of ways to handle extra foot traffic.

The ABIA is fully staffed, equipped with a Department Operations Center (DOC) Activation team to manage any odd occurrences throughout the day.

Guest Services will also have extra volunteers through the airport's Event Response Team to assist with answering questions and organizing crowds and lines.
