Austin airport workers picket for better pay

On Monday, food service and hospitality workers picketed for a $25 per hour minimum wage.

AUSTIN, Texas — Service workers at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport are asking for a raise.

On Monday, food service and hospitality workers picketed for a $25 per hour minimum wage.

They're employed at the airport through a company called Delaware North and they say right now, they're not making a living wage.

"We do deserve better wages as everything is going up – prices, rent, babysitters," Milagros Acevedo with Unite Local 23 told KVUE.

KVUE asked Delaware North for a comment on the picket, but it responded that it is "not going to comment at this time."

In February, Austin flight attendants picketed outside the airport for higher pay. Those employees said they had been without contracts for years and were looking to get a cost-of-living increase to keep up with the changing economy.

The flight attendants with United, Southwest and American airlines said their roles and responsibilities have changed, but the pay hasn't been keeping up.

Last month, flight attendants at Southwest Airlines ratified a contract that includes pay raises totaling more than 33% over four years. Cabin crews with United Airlines and American Airlines, which are represented by other unions, are still negotiating contracts.
