Austin celebrates youngest Tejano Music Award nominee with 'Mia Garcia Day'

City of Austin has declared Oct. 5 as "Mia Garcia Day" to celebrate the 11-year-old who became the youngest Tejano Music Award nominee.

AUSTIN — Friday doesn't just mark the start of the Austin City Limits Festival, it's also a special day for a young girl who now has a day named after her in Austin.

Mia Garcia has accomplished more at 11 years old than most people will twice her age.

She has a black belt in karate, a gymnast and a singer getting national recognition by being the youngest Tejano Music Award nominee.

Because of her accomplishments, the City of Austin has declared Oct. 5 as "Mia Garcia Day."

"I hope it can be a reminder for other people that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to do," Garcia said.

The 11-year-old spent her day at Muller park with her family.

"To any other kid it's just Friday, for me it's a day to celebrate what I've done," Garcia said.

"The day came to be because people started noticing her contributions to the city and society," said her father Chris Garcia.

Mia said her nomination came from the support of her family, and hopes to inspire others in reaching their full potential.

"Si yo puedo, tu puedes [If I can, you can]" said Mia. "You could even do better."

The Tejano Music Awards will soon release the names of the top five nominees and the family is confident that Mia's name will be on the list.

Mia said win or lose, she hopes to open doors to younger generations and inspire those like her little sister.
