AUSTIN — It may be the only festival where the triple-digit heat actually adds to the event, at least that's what some of the attendees told KVUE at the Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival on Sunday.
The fest was held at Fiesta Gardens in East Austin. It featured more than 350 entries and hundreds of gallons of hot sauce.
Some opted to bring canned foods instead of paying the $5 donation fee, all of it benefiting the Central Texas Food Bank. The festival raised 65,000 meals last year.
"This event coming right before a lot of kids are starting school on Monday, it makes sure to help provide meals for those kids in school that we have in programs," said Adiee Gonzales, the Central Texas Food Bank Event Coordinator. "It stocks our food banks right before the school year, so its great timing for us."
It's the 28th year for the largest hot sauce festival in the world.
