City of Austin grants historic status to site of Deep Eddy Cabaret

The business at 2315 Lake Austin Blvd. was formerly Deep Eddy Grocery and has operated as a bar since 1951.

AUSTIN, Texas — The address of 2315 Lake Austin Blvd., formerly Deep Eddy Grocery, has been named a historic city landmark by the city of Austin.

The location was a grocery store in the early 1900s before becoming Deep Eddy Cabaret in 1951. It's been a bar ever since.

A city spokesperson said the historic designation gives the building some protection and allows for some additional tax breaks.

"It has maintained its connection to what people often think of as 'Old Time Austin' and sort of [have] a romantic relationship with," long-time Deep Eddy Cabret bartender Yuri Campbell said.

Deep Eddy Cabaret was started by Mickey Hickman and her family and has been run by the Bridges Family since 2014.

It's a special place for Campbell, who has been a patron and bartender at the establishment for nearly 30 years.

"A family away from home. Most of what I remember is building relationship that have lasted for decades, lots of laughs, a lot of smack talk about sports," Campbell said.

It's a feeling Campbell and others share: the bar is just somewhere people can just be themselves.

Jim Pawlick has been coming since 1988.

"We like it and glad it’s doing good. It is very calm and laid-back,” Pawlick said.

Cambell said Deep Eddy Cabaret looks forward to many more years in its historic site near Deep Eddy Pool.
