Austin Energy says power has been restored to customers in South Austin

Austin Energy said the reason behind the outages was a failed air switch.

AUSTIN, Texas — At the start of KVUE Daybreak Friday morning, Austin Energy was reporting that fewer than 40 customers were without power. But by 6:15 a.m., that number had jumped to more than 7,700.

Austin Energy said at 6:23 a.m. that customers in South Austin were without power because of a circuit lock out. A spokesperson for Austin Energy explained to KVUE's Pamela Comme that the outages are a result of "a failed air switch, which is what is used to move around what substation energy is coming from."

The spokesperson said crews were having to fix the issue at the substation.

At 6:45 a.m., Comme reported that lights had come back on at the intersection of West William Cannon Drive and South First Street. Comme also reported that a crash happened just moments before when the power was out at the intersection.

Austin Energy said just before 7 a.m. that power had been restored to the customers in South Austin.

As of just before 7 a.m., Austin Energy has 34 outages affecting 290 customers.
