A fire at Kealing Middle School in East Austin on Monday night is now under control.
Around 10:40 p.m., the Austin Fire Department (AFD) said crews were on the scene, with smoke on the second floor and an electrical burning smell.
The incident was second-alarm with fire in the wall. Crews used drones to assist with finding "heat signatures" and an aerial view of the scene.
As of just after 11 p.m., the fire was under control. Fire crews were working to remove smoke from the building.
AFD responded to the same school in 2022 after a refrigerator malfunction caused a fire in the teachers’ lounge.
On Tuesday, Austin ISD announced that classes have been canceled at the school on Tuesday, the district's first day back.
