The Austin Fire Department evacuated a Travis County Administration building Friday morning after an escalator in the building malfunctioned and produced a "significant amount of smoke."
Austin Fire said they first responded to the building in the 700 block of Lavaca at 8:05 a.m. Officials said they initially were sent to investigate smoke emitting from the elevator shaft, but they actually found that it was the building's escalator that was not working correctly.
Austin Fire said most of the smoke was on the first floor, and firefighters are working to clear the air.
