27 displaced after massive fire at southwest Austin apartment

The fire started accidentally in the wall around a fireplace, AFD said.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Fire Department is investigating after a massive fire at a three-story apartment building in southwest Austin. Crews said at least 27 people are displaced because of the fire, and no one was hurt.

The fire happened at the Lantana Ridge apartments on West William Cannon Drive around 12:45 a.m. Monday morning.

Investigators told KVUE the fire started accidentally in the wall around a fireplace. The flames reportedly spread through two apartments in one building before reaching the attic.

AFD tweeted photos of some of the damage the fire caused.

Crews evacuated 27 people from 22 apartments in that building.
