AUSTIN, Texas — The city of Austin is launching a new grant program.
The Food and Climate Equity Grant, offered through the city's Office of Sustainability, will give out $150,000 worth of grants looking to nonprofits making a difference in the community.
"Support projects in our community working towards community resilience, climate justice and food justice,” Amanda Rohlich, a Food Policy officer in the Office of Sustainability, said.
Nonprofits can apply until July 18. Grants will start being awarded in September.
Ari Vinograd runs the nonprofit Our Shared Kitchen in Austin, which prepares 30,000 meals each year. She hopes she is part of that funding.
"We prepare hot nutritious meals for individuals experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in Austin," Vinograd said. "Every single day, I go out, or our team goes out. I hear, 'We are hungry.' You don't know what someone is experiencing. It does not matter – everyone needs to eat. Everyone deserve a hot healthy meal."
There is a big need in Travis County, as 15% of the population – more than 180,000 people – are facing food insecurity, according to city data.
