Driver fell 7 feet to first floor after crashing into Austin apartment complex, police say

The incident happened at the Gateway Apartments on Sixth Street.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department is investigating after a man crashed into a Downtown Austin apartment early Thursday morning.

The incident happened at the Gateway Apartments on Sixth Street near MoPac around 2:30 a.m. The apartment is located at 1624 W Sixth St

According to police, the man drove through a gate and then his car fell about seven feet down to the first level of the apartment complex.

The driver allegedly ran away and hid in a nearby creek for about 40 minutes before officers found him.

Police said the driver was taken into custody, but have not confirmed what charges he will face.
