Hazmat crews clean up 'hazardous spill' near Ullrich Water Treatment Plant in West Austin

The Austin Fire Department said the leaked material has been identified as ferric sulfate, a substance used in water treatment.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Fire Department (AFD), Transportation Department and Austin Water crews responded to a "hazardous spill" near the Albert H. Ullrich Water Treatment Plant Tuesday morning.

Just after 10 a.m., AFD said it had crews on the scene of a spill in the 1000 block of Forest View Drive, the same West Austin area where the treatment plant is located. AFD said Redbud Trail from Lake Austin Boulevard to Forest View Drive would be closed as crews worked to contain the spill.

Roughly a half-hour later, AFD said the leak had been stopped and crews were working to clean up the spill. The following intersections were closed in the area: Lake Austin and Redbud, Stratford Drive and Redbud and Forest View and Redbud.

At around 11:30 a.m., AFD said the leaked substance has been identified as ferric sulfate, a substance used in water treatment. Hazmat crews remained on the scene, managing clean-up efforts.

AFD provided an update at around 2:45 p.m., saying that the spill was the result of a leak from a delivery truck carrying the ferric sulfate to the water treatment plant. Plant staff identified the leak and notified AFD before the truck entered the plant site.

No additional information is available at this time.
