AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Independent School District board voted Monday night to move forward with its plan to shut down schools to deal with their $60 million budget shortfall.
Some AISD campuses will shut down starting as early as August of 2020. AISD will determine how many schools will need to close and which ones will be shutting their doors.
The district will hire an equity officer to determine which schools will close and they'll look at low enrollment as they make their decision.
At Monday's board meeting, some residents of Austin ISD said they feared students from low-income families will see the biggest impact.

According to a draft presented back in December, the shutdown of schools was only one of 91 measures proposed to salvage the budget shortfall. Some other possible cuts include increasing high school class size and cutting more than 150 jobs.
Superintendent Dr. Paul Cruz said the district's three main priorities are to move at an exemplary level, have all students read on grade level by third grade and to pay teachers more.
A school district representative said that the 91 draft ideas were not set in stone and are expected to change, but nothing is final until the budget is approved in October.
Here's a look at the AISD "reinvention roadmap":
