AUSTIN — Well, this bites.
Terminix, one of the world's largest pest control companies, announced Monday the nation's top 25 cities with the worst mosquito problems and Austin happens to be one of them.
According to Terminix, mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance because they can carry serious diseases such as West Nile and malaria.
In 2017, mosquitoes were even named the world's deadliest animal by the World Health Organization, beating out sharks and humans.

Although mosquitoes manage to sometimes find a way into your home, there are a few ways to prevent the pesky creatures from invading your space.
According to Terminix, here are a few ways homeowners can reduce the number of mosquitos in their backyards:
- Remove sources of standing water. Some mosquitoes need standing water in order to lay their eggs. Remove open containers, buckets, plastic sheeting or covers and tires that can harbor standing water to help reduce potential breeding sites.
- Clean the gutters. Maintain gutter systems and downspouts to remove leaves and other debris that can build up and lead to water retention.
- Change water sources weekly. Empty or replace the water in outdoor pet bowls, fountains, birdbaths, rain barrels and plant containers to help break the mosquito breeding cycle.
- Replace outdoor lighting. Mosquitoes, like many insects, can be attracted to light. Special bulbs called “bug lights” emit a different type of light than typical light bulbs. Replace outdoor lighting with these “bug lights” to help attract fewer mosquitoes.
Terminix said homeowners with severe mosquito problems should consult with a professional mosquito control provider.
