AUSTIN — If you are an Austin artist who needs a space to create, Austin Parks and Recreation has got you covered.
The department is kicking off a new Artist Access Program, which provides free or low-cost rental space for artists within the Parks and Recreation Department's Cultural Centers. The space can be used for anything from performances to workshops to simply a space to create artwork. Rehearsal time is free, and performance space is rented at a reduced rate of $1 per ticket sold.
The program was created out of a directive from City Council to use Hotel Occupancy Tax's Cultural Arts funds to expand hours at the four city-owned cultural centers to 11 p.m. every day.
A panel made up of professional Austin-based artists will rank applications for the space using an established criteria. Applicants are also asked to provide a free educational program enhancement for the public.
