Prominent Austin attorney Pete Winstead dies at 84

Winstead was appointed by Gov. George W. Bush to be the first chair of the Texas Turnpike Authority in 1997, which was among a number of prominent positions he held.

AUSTIN, Texas — A prominent and well-known civic leader in Austin has died.

Pete Winstead, an attorney and longtime chairman of the board for the Austin Chamber of Commerce, died on Wednesday at the age of 84.

Receiving his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his law degree from the University of Texas, Winstead would become a founding shareholder for Austin's prominent Winstead PC law firm.

Among his contributions as a volunteer to nonprofit organizations, Winstead chaired the $50 million capital campaign for the Dell Seton Medical Center at UT, and in 1997 was appointed by then-Texas governor and future President George W. Bush to be the first chair of the Texas Turnpike Authority.

Winstead also chaired the boards of the Austin Chamber, the Real Estate Council, the United Way, St. Edward’s University, the Greater Austin Crime Commission and KLRU Public Television.
