AUSTIN — Austin Pets Alive! is seeking help from the community as flooding may impact areas around the shelter.
The Facebook post by the shelter stated that flooding is not expected to go into their building, as they are not in the flood plain, but it could limit their access to the facility.
"We've been given no cause for alarm about our buildings actually flooding," said Mary Heerwald. "But we do need to move these animals out in the event it becomes difficult to access our shelter."
The post stated the Lower Colorado River Authority is planning four additional dam floodgates to be opened at Mansfield Dam and the shelter expects this will impact their shelter, but it is still uncertain how.

"At a minimum, we can expect flooding/road closures of Cesar Chavez, meaning that access to our shelter facility could become limited," stated the shelter's Facebook post.
The shelter considers the possible flooding event an emergency situation and they will have both their dog and cat foster teams prepared to match and process as many pets as possible.
"We have staff that will usher you through the process," said Heerwald. "It's pretty quick. And we're really appreciative of the community response we've seen thus far. We have plenty of other animals to get into homes as soon as possible."
The shelter said fostering is the best way you can help them through the possible flood event. They said this will help get the animals offsite and into safer areas.
The shelter said if you are not already a foster, but are willing to offer your home, you can email foster@austinpetsalive.org.
