AUSTIN, Texas — A homicide investigation is underway near a shopping center in North Austin.
Austin police said a call came in around 1:30 p.m. on Monday near the Parmer on the Creek Center on West Parmer Lane close to Interstate 35.
When officers arrived, they found a man in his 40s with apparent gunshot wounds near a grassy and wooded area by the shopping center. Officers tried to save his life, but he died at the scene.
Police said a person of interest was identified and is being interviewed by investigators. A preliminary investigation revealed both the victim and person of interest appeared to be experiencing homelessness.
At this time, it's unclear if police have recovered a weapon. The incident is currently being investigated as Austin's 64th homicide of the year.
