Austin police take measures to avoid a scare on Sixth Street Halloween night

Austin police will take extra measures to allow for a safe evening for those heading out on Sixth Street Halloween night.

AUSTIN — Austin police will be taking extra measures to keep those out on Sixth Street Halloween night safe.

In a press release from APD they stated Sixth Street is expected to draw big crowds Halloween night, so the department will be closing a few streets downtown.

"Sixth Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from Brazos Street to the West Frontage of IH-35." stated police. "Cross streets will be closed between Fifth and Seventh streets. Closures should be completed by 6 p.m. and towing of vehicles parked on Sixth Street and cross streets (Brazos, San Jacinto, Trinity, Neches, Red River and Sabine) will begin at 6 p.m.

APD also wants to remind everyone heading out for the festivities no illegal weapons, open containers of alcohol, or glass containers are allowed on Sixth Street.

Another release from APD said a No Refusal Initiative will be put in place Halloween night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This means during the time frame APD will apply for blood search warrants on suspects who refuse to provide a breath or specimen as required by law. APD stated this initiative is put into place to enforce it's DWI laws, and to encourage drivers to make responsible decisions.
