AUSTIN, Texas — Parades, performances, festivals and more mark the start of Pride Month in many cities across the U.S. Each June, the month-long celebration honors members of the LGBTQ+ community, more than 50 years after a group of protesters took to the streets of New York City to advocate for gay rights.
Many cities – including Houston, Dallas and San Antonio – commemorate Pride Month starting on June 1. But the Lone Star State's capital doesn't host its official events until two months later.
Austin celebrates Pride every August, and although the exact reason remains unknown, there are a number of possible explanations.
According to a report by KUT, it likely comes down to a variety of reasons, including weather, cost, college students and competition.

Texas is known for its scorching summers, with temperatures often reaching 100 degrees or hotter. For this reason, outdoor Pride events might be more comfortable closer to autumn.
Austin's Pride event is also primarily run by roughly 400 volunteers, many of whom are currently in college. Hosting the celebration in August allows more students to participate.
It also takes time for Austin Pride to raise the necessary funds to host a high-quality event. Not only that, but with most cities holding their Pride events in June, Austin might have a higher draw by holding its events in August.
This year, more than 200,000 people are expected to attend the Austin Pride celebration. Registration is open online now.
The Austin Pride festival starts at 11 a.m. on Aug. 10, and general admission starts at $10. The parade begins later that evening at 8 p.m.
