Austin launches new dashboard to track incidents involving self-driving vehicles

Some of Austin's leaders aren't happy with the dashboard, saying city workers are being forced to do the work for the driverless car companies.

AUSTIN, Texas — While Cruise vehicles remain on the streets of Austin with someone in the driver's seat, other companies are still testing their self-driving cars in the city.

As a result, Austin's Downtown Commission says they now have a new dashboard to track incidents involving all autonomous vehicle operations.

Residents can now call 311 to report any issues to city leaders, who will then pass on those reports to the car companies and the Texas Department of Transportation. But some officials aren't happy with the idea that city workers will have to do the work for driverless companies.

"I appreciate the city stepping up to transition the communication," Commissioner Jen Weaver said. "But I think AV companies were serious about building relationships with the public, they would be more interested in that communication. And I'm sad it's being passed to the city."

The dashboard will be updated weekly and sort data by incidents that block traffic, ignore directions from Austin police, and more.
