APD: 21-year-old accused of killing his grandparents in South Austin

The man allegedly told police his grandparents were inside the home unharmed before they discovered two bodies.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man remains in jail after allegedly killing his grandparents over the weekend.

Austin police say 21-year-old Chevy Kyler Monaghan was arrested after two people were killed in South Austin on Saturday.

Police said they received multiple calls concerning the safety of a couple living on Brookhill Drive. The callers told police Monaghan was refusing to open the door to let them see the couple.

When officers arrived, Monaghan was in the driveway of the home and said his grandparents were inside and unharmed, according to police. After getting inside the home, police found Shari Mallory-Maxa and Anthony Maxa dead in a hallway with apparent gunshot wounds.

Monaghan was arrested as a person of interest and has now been charged with capital murder. He's being held in Travis County Jail without bond.

Police said these deaths are Austin's 44th and 45th homicides of 2024.
