Man killed during shootout in southeast Austin identified by police

Police said a man was found lying in the front yard of a home on Thrasher Lane with multiple gunshot wounds.

AUSTIN, Texas — No arrests have been made as police identify the man shot and killed in southeast Austin last week.

The shooting happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 13 on Thrasher Lane near Montopolis Drive and U.S. 183.

Police responded to reports of a shooting and found an unresponsive man lying in the front yard of a home with apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he later died on Dec. 15.

The man was identified as 45-year-old Erik Tijerina. During their preliminary investigation, police said multiple shooters exchanged gunfire in the area, hitting Tijerina, who was in the front yard of a home. It's unclear if Tijerina was involved in the shootout or an innocent bystander.

Tijerina's death is being investigated as Austin's 69th homicide of 2024.

Anyone with information on the shooting should contact police at 512-974-TIPS or Capital Area Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information that leads to an arrest.
