Austin police investigating shooting involving off-duty Travis County deputy

According to the Travis County Sheriff's Office, the deputy is on administrative leave.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating an overnight shooting involving an off-duty Travis County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) deputy.

APD said at approximately 12:18 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, officers responded to a call for service to help the TCSO in the 6200 block of the south Interstate 35 frontage road, near William Cannon Drive.

APD said initial information indicates an off-duty Travis County deputy was "involved in an altercation in his personal vehicle with another driver while traveling south" on South I-35 proper. The department said during this incident, "a weapon or weapons were discharged."

No injuries were reported due to the incident, according to APD. The department said this information is preliminary, and the investigation is in its very early stages. It is not clear at this time if any arrests have been made.

The TCSO said that it will not release the identity of the deputy but, as is customary in situations like this, they have been placed on administrative leave.

APD said its Special Investigation Unit, in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney's Office, will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident. APD is asking anyone with any information to call 512-974-6840 or contact Capital Area Crime Stoppers either online or by calling 512-472-8477.

No additional information is available at this time.
