APD drone destroyed by suspect before escaping SWAT standoff in northeast Austin

Police did not release the identity or description of the suspect.

AUSTIN, Texas — A man is on the run following a SWAT standoff in northeast Austin.

According to the Austin Police Department (APD), the incident began at a home on Ash Cove, near East Braker Lane and Interstate 35, just after 3 a.m. Friday.

Police said a woman called saying her father was armed and wanted to end his life. She also told police he had already fired his gun once and nearly hit a member of the household.

Six people, including the suspect, were inside the house when officers arrived. Someone who wasn't the suspect eventually left the house just before 5:30 a.m.

About two hours later, APD used a drone to find the suspect, which police said was knocked out of the air and destroyed by the suspect. During that time, three other people managed to escape from the house.

Concerned that the suspect was still inside a shed with someone else, APD used flash-bang grenades to breach the shed. A man was recovered from the shed, but there was still no sign of a suspect. APD shifted their attention to the house by using tear gas but said they did not find a suspect after clearing the residence.

Police believe the suspect managed to escape after destroying the drone and said the area is heavily wooded, which may have led the suspect to break their containment. They also believe that this is an isolated incident with no threat to the public.

According to police, everyone inside the house during the standoff appeared to be related.
