Advocates say Austin's abandoned shopping carts are warning sign of city's handle on homelessness

The group says they want to know what the city's plans are for all the abandoned carts around town and that they're a warning sign that something must be done.

AUSTIN, Texas — A group of advocates say they're unhappy with how Austin leaders are handling homelessness.

The MOVE Candlewood group was outside of Austin City Hall on Thursday delivering shopping carts because they say the city has gone from the "Live Music Capital of the World" to the "Abandoned Shopping Cart Capital."

The group previously protested a former hotel being turned into supportive housing for people exiting homelessness. The City of Austin bought the Candlewood Suites hotel in August 2021, which led to residents claiming the decision then brought crime to the neighborhood.

"I want to show the plight of what businesses are going through every single day in Austin," Rupal Chaudhari said. "This is a token gift from the district residents and businesses, from each district so that's why we have each council member listed on it. They should accept it because this is exactly what they have brought to our doorstep."

The group says they want to know what the city's plans are for all the abandoned carts around town and say they're a warning sign that it's time to action before it's too late.
