Police identify victim in southeast Austin homicide

The incident happened in the 3600 block of Chapman Lane.

AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police have identified the victim in a homicide in southeast Austin. On Friday night, APD said officers were investigating a "suspicious death," but the incident has been ruled a homicide as of Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened in the 3600 block of Chapman Lane. APD said it received a shoot/stab hot shot call at approximately 8:22 p.m. on Friday, where the caller told 911 he saw a body with trauma laying near the road. APD officers and Austin-Travis County EMS arrived on the scene.

APD said the victim – identified as 25-year-old Desmond Alexander Herrera – was found with obvious trauma to his body. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at 8:33 p.m. Herrera was identified as an employee of a game room located at 3612 Chapman Lane, according to APD.

Homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses and canvassing the area for video. The cause of death is still to be determined pending an autopsy from the Travis County Medical Examiner's office.

APD streamed a media briefing from its Twitter page Friday night. The department is asking for the public's assistance in solving the case. Anyone with information or video of the incident is urged to call 512-974-TIPS (8477).

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
