AUSTIN — Thousands of Central Texas drivers have been taking toll roads and not paying for it. There's now going to be a serious crackdown coming to some of those violators.
Over the last year, there were about 17,000 drivers in Central Texas who had more than 100 unpaid tolls. The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) board of directors unanimously approved a plan Wednesday to start focusing in on these drivers.
The violators have the potential to be banned from using the toll roads CTRMA runs -- 183-A, U.S. 290 East, Texas 71 and the MoPac Boulevard express toll lanes -- if they don't pay by January. They could even be stopped from renewing their vehicle registration or their car could be impounded.

The top 100 violators racked up almost $350,000 in unpaid tolls, with the top violator accumulating $5,500 in fines, according to CTRMA. In the coming months, the agency will notify all 17,000 offenders and give them the chance to fix their debt with a payment plan. Once January hits though, those planned sanctions will go into place.
