AUSTIN, Texas — As we head into another summer season here in Central Texas, our transitional months are something to keep an eye on, especially May.
Historically, May in Austin is most notably characterized as the wettest month of the year, behind October. However, if you were in Austin this May, you may have noticed the above-average warmth and humidity more than the rain.
There were only seven days with below-normal high temperatures throughout the month. The last full week of May was especially warm, ahead of Memorial Day when we received our first Excessive Heat Warning of the year.
This is also the earliest the Austin/San Antonio office of the National Weather Service has ever issued an Excessive Heat Warning, beating the previous earliest date, which was June 11, 2022.
At the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, May 2022 still holds the crown for the warmest May on record, but 2024 tied May 1956 for second place. Meanwhile, Camp Mabry, our other major weather station, recorded its sixth warmest May ever.
While temperatures were mostly above-normal, precipitation totals can be categorized closer to the near-normal threshold. The average rainfall for both weather stations is about 5 inches.
Camp Mabry recorded about an inch above average, and AUS recorded about an inch below average.
June is predicted to be another above-normal month in regards to temperatures, while Central Texas has equal chances of above or below-normal precipitation.
