AUSTIN — Austin's We Are Blood organization has joined the nationwide search to find some of the rarest blood in the world.
It's needed to save the life of Florida two-year-old Zainab.
She was diagnosed with neuroblastoma two months ago -- and her blood type is so rare that even her own family is not a match, and it's extremely hard to find.
Donors must have blood types O or A and be 100 percent of Indian, Iranian or Pakistani descent.
For a person fitting this description to be a match, they must also be missing the Indian "B" antigen, which comes down to genetics.
Less than four percent of the world's population has the blood type Zainab needs to undergo treatment, which would include frequent blood transfusions.
"Right now, they do have a few units in stock, but that is not enough."
If you want to see if you're a match, mention Zainab's name when donating blood to We Are Blood, so they can track and process your donations correctly.
