Bat tests positive for rabies after falling out of student's pocket near Dripping Springs

Officials said the bat fell out of a Sycamore Springs Elementary student's jacket pocket on Friday.

HAYS COUNTY, Texas — A bat has tested positive for the rabies virus after it fell out of a student's pocket in the Dripping Springs area, according to the Hays County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said they responded to Sycamore Springs Elementary School on Oct. 26 for a live bat call. The animal was discovered around 2:45 p.m. when it fell out of a student's jacket pocket. The sheriff's office said the jacket was brought inside after being left on the playground. The teach immediately isolated the bat from students before handing it over to animal control.

The bat was then examined by the Department of State Health Services, who determined that it tested positive for rabies.
