GEORGETOWN, Texas — Animal Services in Georgetown have captured 27 bats from inside various buildings around the town during the month of February.

While all bats tested negative for carrying rabies, the Animal Control supervisor has a message for residents.

“If you remember nothing else, do not touch the bat, and call Animal Control,” says John Torrez.

Spring is when Mexican free-tailed bats arrive in Central Texas.

Torrez says on the occasion when a bat does enter a building, many will exit on their own given the opportunity.

“Turn off any interior lights and allow a clear pathway such as an open door for them to escape.”

Bats typically will fly away at dusk if left alone.

Residents are urged to keep away from bats that have landed on the ground and keep pets up to date on rabies vaccinations. Pet doors should be closed off at night.
