Birthday party with strangers? From Reddit post to birthday bash

With nothing to do on her 24th birthday, Austinite Lauren Hamilton turned to Reddit.

With nothing to do on her 24th birthday, Austinite Lauren Hamilton turned to Reddit.

Hamilton said she normally plans a birthday party each year to celebrate "surviving" that year, but her job put a kink in her tradition. She said her schedule doesn't allow for a lot of free time, so when her list of about 10 friends couldn't make it to celebrate this year and with her family gone for a wedding she decided to test the internet.

Hamilton said she posted on a whim to Austin's subreddit before bed earlier this week and wasn't expecting much feedback -- let alone a lot of positive feedback -- the next morning.

Hamilton said she  posted on a whim to Austin's subreddit  before bed earlier this week and wasn't expecting much feedback, let alone a lot of positive feedback the next morning.

"I didn't expect the response that I got," Hamilton told KVUE. "I figured they'd be angry, 'Okay that's really lame you're asking people to come to your party online.'"

There are over 100 comments on her post, accepting the invitation, wishing her a happy birthday and some even offering to bring cake and a gift.

Hamilton responded to almost every single comment.

"For me it's a bigger picture, it shows there are a lot of good people here," Hamilton said.

With so many people saying they'll come to the meet up Hamilton had to come up with a way for people to identify her. She'll be holding balloons that say "24."

"I hope people come out not just for me, but to get that sweet Austin friendly feel," Hamilton said.

The gathering for her birthday will be at Warehouse Billiards on Ben White Boulevard Saturday night.
