AUSTIN, Texas — A new exhibition at the Blanton Museum takes on a controversial topic.
The City paintings unveiled on Tuesday, which depict KKK members in a modern setting.
When asked why this subject was chosen, the museum's director, Simone Wicha released this statement:
"Expanding knowledge and human understanding is a core value of The University of Texas at Austin, and central to the mission of the Blanton Museum of Art. Great works of art can prompt complex inquiries. The City paintings were created by Texas-based artist Vincent Valdez as an exploration of racism, one of the most persistent and challenging social issues of our day. Art raises uncomfortable questions at times, but the rewards that come from having difficult conversations are many and important. We encourage everyone to view the work, explore our resources and public programs, and join the conversation."
The exhibition runs through October 28, 2018.
