APD: Investigation underway after body found near Rainey Street

At this time, police said they're not investigating the man's death as a homicide and investigators don't suspect foul play.

AUSTIN, Texas — An investigation is ongoing after a body was found near Rainey Street on Friday.

Austin police said they received a welfare check call around 5:30 p.m. after people walking by spotted a body on the trail near Waller Beach at Town Lake Metro Park.

When officers arrived, they found a man with life-threatening injuries to his body, believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead about 15 minutes after the initial call. In a correction on Sunday morning, police said an initial description of "blunt force trauma" used to describe the victim's injury was incorrect.

At this time, police said they're not investigating the man's death as a homicide and investigators don't suspect foul play. Officials also said there is no serial killer and that the man's death is an isolated incident.

Police believe they have the identity of the man but did not release anything at this time.

The discovery comes just as crews finish safety improvements along the Rainey Street Trailhead, which stemmed from community members asking for better lighting and other improvements to the area.
