AUSTIN -- The Capital Area Food Bank of Texas kicks off its "Summer Meals That Matter" campaign Tuesday. The campaign is focused on feeding people during one of the toughest times of the year.

Summer presents unique challenges for Central Texas families facing hunger.

One in four children are at risk of hunger, and in Austin ISD, two out of three children receive reduced price or free lunches during the school year. During the summer months, when children are not in school, those meals aren't available.

High temperatures leave adults struggling to pay high utility bills during the summer months, leaving less funds for food. More than one third of adults served by the Capital Area Food Bank to extended periods without food.

Area politicians, executives and local media personalities will be on hand to help kick off the program at 10:30 a.m. The food bank hopes to provide 1 million meals this summer.

The food bank says donations slow down in the summer months.
