AUSTIN, Texas — Capital Metro is revamping its bicycle service this summer.
Starting Monday, CapMetro announced existing MetroBikes will be temporarily suspended to make way for its new CapMetro Bikeshare.
The update will feature new all electric bikes, new docking stations and a new app. Full completion of the Bikeshare launch is expected in the fall.
"The transition to CapMetro Bikeshare represents our dedication to providing innovative, sustainable and convenient transportation options for Austin,” Dottie Watkins, CapMetro president and CEO, said. “We’re thrilled to offer these new e-assist bikes, enhanced docking stations and improvements, to ensure a better biking experience and make it easier and more enjoyable to navigate our city.”
CapMetro said the new bikes will offer a more stable and comfortable ride than existing MetroBikes.
Annual and 31-day pass purchases were paused on June 1 as part of the transition. Existing MetroBike memberships will transfer to CapMetro Bikeshare. Those with existing memberships will receive and email with instructions on how to transfer your account to the new system.
The city was able to move forward on Bikeshare updates because of an over $11 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.
