The City of Austin has reached a settlement with the APD officer who was fired after fatally shooting a naked, unarmed teen in February.

The city said the agreement will ensure Geoffrey Freeman "will never work again for the Austin Police Department, waives any claims against the City, and pays him $35,000."

“The department is aware that Geoffrey Freeman and the City of Austin have come to an agreement to settle the arbitration and the Austin Police Department respects this decision,” Interim Police Chief Brian Manley said in a release. “APD continues its commitment to uphold the highest standards for its officers.”

Freeman fatally shot David Joseph, 17, in northeast Austin on Feb. 8. He was fired from the department on March 21 by then-Police Chief Art Acevedo. A Travis County grand jury did not indict Freeman in the shooting.

Had the city and Freeman not reached an agreement, an arbitration hearing was scheduled to begin Monday, Dec. 5.
